Yes, independent contractor therapists do have obligations similar to those of employees, especially concerning their professional responsibilities. Here’s a breakdown:

  1. Notice Period: Even though independent contractor therapists are not bound by the same employment contracts as employees, they should still provide reasonable notice if they intend to terminate their services. This allows clients time to find alternative care and ensures a smooth transition. LifeCare requires a 30-day notice.

  2. Caseload Management: Independent contractors are responsible for managing their caseloads effectively. This includes maintaining client appointments, ensuring continuity of care, and addressing any issues that arise with their clients’ treatment plans.

  3. Professional Responsibility: Independent contractor therapists must adhere to the same ethical and professional standards as employees. This includes confidentiality, informed consent, and maintaining appropriate boundaries with clients.

  4. Transition Planning: If a contractor decides to end their services, they often need to assist in the transition of their clients to another therapist, ensuring that client’s needs are met and that they are referred to appropriate resources. 15-30 days is appropriate to plan a vacation or a temporary leave-  Do not drop patients and or inform LifeCare of a long vacation or leaving in less than 15-30 days notice. Vacations need to be communicated and planned.

  5. Communication: Clear and timely communication is crucial. Independent contractors should inform clients and any relevant parties (such as administrative staff or supervisors) about any changes to their availability or service. This includes the volume of caseload if you regularly commit to a certain caseload- you are not to change that without notice or having LifeCare make other arrangements. We rely on your commitment to a certain volume and caseload. If that changes we need notice. We rely on you when hired to set a commitment to a certain caseload- now when you increase your volume that is helpful. Decreasing your volume of patients hurts LifeCare as we then need to open up new positions and that takes time to fill possibly leaving patients on a hold list.

While independent contractor therapists enjoy greater flexibility and autonomy compared to employees, they still have significant responsibilities toward their clients. These obligations ensure that client care remains consistent and professional, regardless of the contractor’s employment status. Thank you for understanding!
