About this program

Strategies for Success

Therapeutic Interventions for Dementia Engagement (TIDE) is a program created by LifeCare Therapy Services that is led by occupational therapists and is specifically geared for the treatment of Alzheimer's and related Dementia Conditions. The principles that guide this program include:

  1. Occupational Therapists are ideal to direct the program. Occupational therapists are experts at understanding the intricate and dynamic relationships between person, environment, and occupation (task) that are required to successfully provide recommendations and strategies that promote safety, optimum function, and improved quality of life. The OT Team will make the recommendations to add PT and ST as appropriate if not ordered by MD at the time of referral.

  2. The program is best suited to be provided in the home. Home-based interventions are research-proven to have the highest impact and outcomes as the home gives the opportunity to evaluate the environment, make recommendations, and include the care providers in the treatment.

  3. Education may be the most important service you provide. Most care providers are untrained family members who are ill-prepared to manage the many physical, cognitive, and psychological changes that occur during the natural disease progression. Teaching and training through role play, demonstration, and sharing of resources will have the biggest impact.

  4. Outcomes are not based on numbers. It truly does not matter if upper body strength is 4 or 4+/5; what matters is if they can perform self-care and meaningful activities. Outcomes are going to be based on quality of interactions, caregiver stress levels, and our ability to help create activities that engage the patient.

This website has oodles of information for therapists to help with activity suggestions, goal writing, and ADL resources that can be used by the therapy team and also shared with the care provider. I welcome your suggestions for additional content and ways to help our team be the best at providing interventions for the care of persons with dementia.

Thank you for all you do,

Connie Bonis, MOTR/L

Director of Clinical Services
